‘Kambrokind’ brings nostalgia, romance and forgotten highways in the countryside to mind. Borrowed from a classic FA Venter travel novel, the name befittingly describes the beautiful family owned and run guesthouse. Also part of their group is Middelfontein Guest Farm.
The perfect marriage between ‘platteland’ (classic countryside) and luxury, Kambrokind Bed and Breakfast reminds you of something from a storybook. Beautiful white bedding styled with the warmth of some reds and quaint finishing touches in the form of décor. Kambrokind is situated centrally, literally one of the first guesthouses you will spot in the main road. Choose one of six en-suit room choices, with the option of a self-catering unit, should you prefer the freedom. And although many places in Sutherland do not have television, you can snuggle up on cold nights with selected DSTV channels and naturally some electric blankets and heaters.
You can expect to be just as charmed by the lovely Middelfontein Guestfarm. This lovely guestfarm gives you the advantage of a farm experience combined with the convenience of being close tot own. It is located 1.3km outside of Sutherland with three unit options. Once again you won’t be disappointed with style and country charm. Breathe in the Karoo air on the stoep and watch the stars appear one by one.
For the family, there is Fontein. With two large bedrooms, this farmhouse can comfortably sleep 7 people and has a sunroom where you can enjoy views over the landscape. Of course there is a braai inside the kitchen and all you need to self-cater. Only 100 metres away is Fonteintjie. This is a completely separate unit, but can be booked with the main house, complete with an intercom for communication. Fonteintjie’s stoep overlooks the river and is perfect for bird watching. Once again this unit has all you need for self-catering. These units also have DSTV to keep the family entertained on colder days.
Saffraan is the jewel of this guest farm’s crown in my opinion. A stone cottage that offers a proper Karoo experience. No electricity, a large fireplace and the perfect spot for a romantic weekend away filled with conversation and red wine. It is also ideally located for photographers who want to experiment with capturing the nightsky. Of course you have everything you need, including a gas cooker, gas fridge and gas geyser for warm water.
With so many options in Sutherland it is often hard to choose! Kambrokind and Middelfontein offer great options for both families and couples. But don’t believe us, visit Sutherland to make up your own mind. Find them here. And here are a few of their previous guests’ opinions:
5 stars: “My husband and I had an amazing, romantic stay in the Saffraan stone cottage. During the day we ran the 10km mountain bicycle track that was exceeding well marked, and enjoyed the amazing views. At night we made a fire in our cottage and enjoyed looking at the stars, drinking our wine by candlelight. Our hosts attended to our every need. An unforgettable stay!”

5 stars: “A recent road trip into the heart of the Karoo turned out to be one of our best road trips in years. The highlight of this trip was a three night stay at Kambro Kind B&B in Sutherland.
Hosts Gary and Juanita went the extra mile to ensure that our stay was a truly memorable one. Our choice of accommodation was a cottage on their farm Middelplaas. Our cottage, Fonteintjie, was the perfect accommodation for us! Fully equipped for self-catering, with a built in braai in the kitchen area.
All the creature comforts such as electric blanket, really hot water for those winter night showers, and having our cottage serviced on a daily basis.
Breakfast was an additional bonus which was served in their dining hall in the town itself.
Our visit also included an evening star gazing outing run by Juanita’s dad, Jorg.
We also visited the main observatory up on the hill on the outskirts of town, and that was a real treat.
If you have not been to Sutherland yet, make sure that you put a visit there on your bucket list.
As far as accommodation goes, it’s a no brainer.
Book well in advance with Juanita online, and you will have an awesome all round experience.”

TripAdvisor 5 stars: As always a trip to Sutherland is not the same unless we are staying at Kambrokind Guest House. Spotlessly clean room, warm blankets and electric blankets to snuggle up into. Good breakfast with friendly staff. Juanita is knowledgeable and extremely helpful in booking tours etc. in and around Sutherland. Wonderful hospitality from really warm and caring folk. In my mind, one of the best places to stay in Sutherland.
