“Blydevooruitsig” – Something to look forward to

Every little thing about Sutherland will surprise you. That is because, if you haven’t been here before, you won’t have an idea of what to expect. For starters, the winding road that takes you up and down, and up and down… cuts through the semi-arid landscape of the Karoo. From a distance, you spot the largest beacon – yes you will see SALT (Southern African Large Telescope), but you are even more likely to see the church tower, standing tall at the centre of town.

Sutherland is gravel and dust – and in spring, gravel, dust and flowers. The setting is painted with grey and white tones. That is why you will be pleasantly surprised when you arrive at the lovely Blydevooruitsig Guest House around the corner. “Blyde” (glad/joyous), “vooruitsig” (expectation) offers you exactly this. The guesthouse is a lovely, large family home built in the vernacular style using sandstone from the area. Outside a big, green lawn, with trees and a surrounding fence greet you. You immediately get a sense of ‘home’, becoming more pertinent as you enter the four-bedroom house.

Each room has been prepared with beautiful, clean and warm bedding.  The kitchen is fully equipped, which is great for a family getaway where time around the table is a key activity. With four bedrooms, a lovely large lounge the house is so lovely and spacious that even a group of ten could stay comfortably. But that’s not the best part – the stoep area and outside braai makes for a lovely evening of good conversation under the beautiful night sky that only Sutherland can offer. It would not be hard to forget that you are in town – the privacy and massive yard, big rooms and divine bathrooms (with big tubs to soak in), really creates a farm-lodge type of feeling. All the while you are walking distance from town (although this probably doesn’t take much in this small town). So whether you want to cater for yourself, or dine out, stargaze from the stoep or enjoy a stargazing tour in town or at SALT – Blydevooruitsig is the perfect setting and definitely gives you something to look forward to!
