“At the Jupiter…”Come as a stranger, leave as a friend…

As a traveller you should always make an effort to experience a new destination – like a local. From eating food, to sharing a drink and a laugh, to hearing some local stories… you have not truly experienced a town, until you’ve done these things.

There are a few places to pop in at in Sutherland (believe it or not). This small town does not disappoint when it comes to options for dining out. Of course you will not find a Spur or a Steers here- and herein lies the beauty – no franchise, no branding, just pure local restaurants and bars.

One such spot you cannot miss when in Sutherland is The Jupiter Restaurant and guest house.  For the coldest place in South Africa, this family restaurant is sure to warm you up! The Jupiter offers a lovely menu with variety and of course local flavours. Lamb, steak , burgers and pizza…and the best part about their menu is that it also caters for kids. This really is a family restaurant – with a jungle gym at the back (for those who will brave it in winter), a fully licensed bar and a cosy seating area inside with a fireplace chatting away in the background.

5 stars: “My husband and I had an amazing, romantic stay in the Saffraan stone cottage. During the day we ran the 10km mountain bicycle track that was exceeding well marked, and enjoyed the amazing views. At night we made a fire in our cottage and enjoyed looking at the stars, drinking our wine by candlelight. Our hosts attended to our every need. An unforgettable stay!”

5 stars: “A recent road trip into the heart of the Karoo turned out to be one of our best road trips in years. The highlight of this trip was a three night stay at Kambro Kind B&B in Sutherland.
Hosts Gary and Juanita went the extra mile to ensure that our stay was a truly memorable one. Our choice of accommodation was a cottage on their farm Middelplaas. Our cottage, Fonteintjie, was the perfect accommodation for us! Fully equipped for self-catering, with a built in braai in the kitchen area.
All the creature comforts such as electric blanket, really hot water for those winter night showers, and having our cottage serviced on a daily basis.
Breakfast was an additional bonus which was served in their dining hall in the town itself.
Our visit also included an evening star gazing outing run by Juanita’s dad, Jorg.
Really worthwhile!
We also visited the main observatory up on the hill on the outskirts of town, and that was a real treat.
Absolutely fascinating.
If you have not been to Sutherland yet, make sure that you put a visit there on your bucket list.
As far as accommodation goes, it’s a no brainer.
Book well in advance with Juanita online, and you will have an awesome all round experience.”

TripAdvisor 5 stars: As always a trip to Sutherland is not the same unless we are staying at Kambrokind Guest House. Spotlessly clean room, warm blankets and electric blankets to snuggle up into. Good breakfast with friendly staff. Juanita is knowledgeable and extremely helpful in booking tours etc. in and around Sutherland. Wonderful hospitality from really warm and caring folk. In my mind, one of the best places to stay in Sutherland.
